AUGER PILES at St. Jude Children's Hospital

General Contractor: Flintco Construction

Barcus and Schnabel along with GC Flintco teamed up to design and install an economical shoring system consisting of Auger Piles to utilize the drilling equipment that would be onsite for the production pile work. This photograph shows one drill rig installing test piles in the excavation after installing (189) 24” shoring wall Auger Piles.

mobilization of second drill rig

After successfully installing and running three load tests Barcus mobilized a second drill rig to begin the installation of the 18-inch diameter Auger Pile foundation with drill depths ranging from 60 – 80 ft below grade. The design capacity of the Auger Piles ranged from 90 tons – 112 tons each.

INSTALLATION OF REBAR CAGE

After drilling and grouting each Auger Pile Barcus installed a 25 ft rebar cage and full-length center bar. The rebar projection above grade required detailed planning and look ahead with respect to the pile installation sequence.

STRICT QUALITY CONTROL & SAFETY

Continuing to install production piles in the excavation. As the site became more congested Barcus held daily meetings with the GC Flintco to discuss completing the pile foundation as efficiently as possible while maintaining a strict quality control and safety standard.

WORKING CONCURRENTLY WITH OTHER TRADES

Barcus was successful in scheduling our work and able to sequence the pile installation to allow for multiple trades to be working concurrently. While Barcus was still installing piles, Flintco was able to start forming and pouring pile caps early and improve their overall schedule.

IN 5 MONTHS ON SITE
2,317 18″ PILES + 146,700 LF DRILL FOOTAGE

Barcus utilized one drill rig to finish up the Auger Pile foundation. In total Barcus installed 2,317, 18-inch piles with an aggregate drill footage of 146,700 LF during the 5 months onsite.
